How Mercury Ignition Works

A small mercury switch completes a circuit when you press the ignition button, creating a high-voltage spark at the burner. The spark ignites natural gas flowing from your burner head. If the spark fails to produce a flame within 5–10 seconds, the safety mechanism shuts off gas flow, preventing dangerous accumulation of unburned gas.

Installation

Install the mercury ignitor near your burner control area, typically on the rim or side of your fire bowl or pit. Connect the ignitor button, spark electrode, and ground wire per manufacturer instructions. Test in 5-second increments to confirm reliable ignition. If ignition fails after 2–3 attempts, check spark electrode gap and gas flow before troubleshooting further.

Maintenance

Mercury ignitors require minimal maintenance. Occasionally clean the spark electrode of dust or corrosion using a wire brush. Replace the spark wire every 3–5 years or if it visibly corrodes.
