The Victron Energy 1000A/50mV shunt is a precision current measurement component for battery monitoring systems. It works with Victron BMV battery monitors and compatible energy meters, and suits high-current DC applications in off-grid, marine and commercial installations.

How it works

A shunt inserts a known, very low resistance into the main DC current path. The voltage drop across it is proportional to the current flowing through the circuit. At 1000A this shunt produces exactly 50mV, which a connected battery monitor reads and converts into a current figure. The 50mV standard is used across Victron's monitoring range, so this shunt can serve as a replacement or upgrade component in an existing system.

Installation

The M10 terminal bolts suit the heavy-gauge cable used in high-current battery banks, inverter connections and DC distribution systems. Connections must be torqued correctly: an under-tightened terminal at this current rating causes localised heating and measurement error. Fit the shunt in the negative conductor, between the battery negative terminal and all other loads and charge sources, following standard single-shunt monitoring practice. Installation should be carried out by a qualified electrician or experienced solar installer.

Used for battery current monitoring in off-grid solar systems with large battery banks, marine DC systems, motorhome and vehicle conversion builds with lithium or AGM batteries, and commercial or industrial backup power systems using Victron BMV monitors.
