Product overview

Gel electrolyte prevents stratification and acid spills, which suits installations that aren't always perfectly upright or well ventilated. Gel chemistry also tends to cope better than flooded lead-acid when left in a partial state of charge, which happens often in weather-dependent solar charging.

At 165Ah (C20), usable capacity works out to around 82Ah when discharged to the recommended 50% depth of discharge for cyclic use. Factor this into autonomy calculations. The 12V format allows series wiring for 24V or 48V banks, or parallel wiring to add capacity at 12V.

Gel batteries need a charge profile matched to their chemistry. Charging voltages sit lower than for flooded types, and exceeding them causes permanent damage to the gel structure. Set any charge controller, inverter-charger or standalone charger to the correct Victron gel profile before it's ever connected.

Installation as part of a solar PV or off-grid system should be carried out by a qualified electrician or MCS-accredited installer, with terminal protection and fusing in line with BS 7671.
