Product overview

The EM540 measures voltage, current, power factor, frequency and energy (kWh) independently on each of the three phases. Connected to a GX device, this data shows up in the Victron console and logs to the VRM portal, giving a clear view of energy flows across the installation. The 65A per phase rating covers most three-phase residential and light commercial loads without needing external current transformers.

Communication runs over RS485 using Modbus RTU, connecting to the GX device via VE.Can or a USB-to-RS485 interface depending on the device. Correct addressing and wiring of the RS485 bus matters where several meters share the same network. The EM540 replaces the older EM24 in most new installations and is the current recommended meter for three-phase monitoring on Victron GX products.

Used as a grid meter, the EM540 enables ESS functionality on compatible Victron Multi and Quattro inverter/chargers, letting the system optimise battery charge and discharge against grid import and export. This is a common use case in UK and EU solar-plus-storage installations.

Installation notes

The EM540 should be installed by a qualified electrician, connecting in-line with the AC supply conductors inside a live distribution board. RS485 wiring to the GX device must be correctly terminated and addressed where multiple meters share a bus. For grid-connected ESS systems in the UK, the installation must comply with G98 or G99 as applicable. Do not exceed the 65A per phase rating; higher load currents need external current transformers and a compatible meter variant.
