The Victron Smart Battery Sense is a wireless battery voltage and temperature sensor that sends data to compatible Victron MPPT solar charge controllers using VE.Smart Networking. This long range version communicates over Bluetooth up to 10 metres, so it suits systems where the charge controller sits well away from the battery.

Why voltage and temperature sensing matters

When a charge controller is mounted at a distance from the battery bank, resistance in the cabling means the voltage read at the controller differs from the actual battery voltage. Left uncorrected, the controller can stop charging before the battery is full. Charge voltages correct at 25°C can also overcharge in heat or undercharge in cold, which matters for lead-acid battery life. The Smart Battery Sense measures both figures at the battery and passes them to the controller over the VE.Smart Network, along with any other Victron devices sharing that network.

Applications

Suits campervans and motorhomes with the battery bank in a separate locker from the solar charge controller, marine installations with remote battery compartments, and off-grid cabins or sheds where the cable run between battery and controller is long enough to cause measurable voltage drop.

Installation notes

The unit connects at the battery terminals and is powered by the battery it monitors. It must be paired with a Victron MPPT charge controller or other VE.Smart-compatible device, and is configured through the Victron Connect app on a Bluetooth-enabled device. It carries no mains voltage but should be fitted by someone familiar with 12V or 24V DC systems. Grid-connected solar PV work should always go to a qualified or MCS-accredited installer.
