Quincy 473DS80VCB46 QT Pro — 7.5 HP, 80-Gallon Vertical Two-Stage Air Compressor, 460V 3-Phase

This is the combination a plant floor usually wants and rarely gets offered: the higher three-phase supply voltage and the smaller footprint, in the same machine. The motor is wound for 460V 3-Phase, the receiver stands upright on about 37" by 24" of floor, and the pump delivers 22.6 CFM at 175 PSI on a 100% duty cycle. If your building is fed at the higher distribution voltage and your floor is already spoken for, this is the member of the QT Pro family to look at.

Read this before ordering — our own copy overstates the machine

The description that has been on this page makes three claims our specification record does not support, and one that has no source at all. We would rather correct them in public than leave them to be discovered after delivery.

There is no automatic moisture drain. The old copy described an automatic drain system. Our record says no electronic drain valve is fitted. Plan on draining the receiver manually, or ask us to quote an automatic drain alongside the compressor.

There is no low-lubricant cut-out. The old copy described a trigger that halts the machine when oil is low. Our record says no pump low-oil shutdown is fitted. Checking the sight glass is a person's job on this build.

A motor speed was quoted with a tilde and no source. An approximate figure preceded by a squiggle is a guess wearing a lab coat. We are not repeating it, and if pump or motor speed matters to your specification, ask and we will get it from Quincy in writing.

The footnote markers pointed at nothing. The previous copy carried superscript markers with no footnotes anywhere on the page. That is a copy-and-paste artefact from somebody else's document, which is a reasonable reason to distrust the paragraphs around it — and part of why this page was rewritten from the specification sheet rather than tidied up.

Separately, the web address of this page carries a code slightly different from the model number shown in the heading, 473DS80VCB46, which is also what our record holds. Send us the code on your quote and we will confirm the build in writing.

What the high supply voltage is for

The compressor does exactly the same work as the lower-voltage builds of this pump. What changes is the electrical installation: for the same output, a motor fed at a higher voltage draws proportionally less current, so conductors and protection can be smaller and voltage drop over a long run from the panel matters less. In a large building, where the compressor often sits a very long way from the switchboard, that is a real saving in copper and a real gain in reliability.

What we will not print is a current draw or a breaker size. Quincy's own sheet for this model says to consult a certified electrician, and the correct answer genuinely depends on the starter, the conductor run and your local code. A magnetic starter comes with the machine. The winding is fixed at manufacture — there is no reconfiguring a 460V machine for a lower supply — so measure before you order.

22.6 CFM, and how to size against it

The receiver stores air; the pump supplies it. Sizing a compressor against tank capacity is the classic mistake, because a tank only postpones the moment you run out. Add up the continuous consumption of the tools you expect to have running simultaneously, leave headroom above that number, and compare it to 22.6 CFM. Intermittent tools — impacts, ratchets, blow guns — barely register. Continuous ones — sanders, blast cabinets, plasma — are what consume a compressor of this class on their own.

The 175 PSI ceiling matters as much as the volume. Air stored at high pressure is air you can regulate down to whatever each tool wants, and it means the tank holds meaningfully more usable air than the same vessel at a lower pressure.

How it is built

Two-stage compression with a high-efficiency finned intercooler between the stages: coarse compression in a large cast iron cylinder, heat removed in the intercooler, final compression in a smaller one. An aluminum head sheds what heat is left. A large balanced cast iron flywheel damps the pulses and fans air across the pump. The drive is by belt, so the pump turns well below motor speed, and lubrication is by splash in a cast iron crankcase. It is a conservative, heavy, slow-turning design, and that is the reason this pump family is measured in tens of thousands of hours.

Siting and responsibility

Allow the footprint plus room to walk round it, and about 74" of height — then look up and confirm nothing is in the way at that level: ducting, lighting, sprinklers, mezzanine edges. You need clearance above the pump to reach the oil fill and remove the belt guard, not just to stand the tank upright.

The machine weighs around 740 lbs on a small base. Flat, sound concrete, levelled and secured, with clear air around the pump and heads. Confirming the incoming supply, providing the circuit, disconnect and protection, and providing a floor rated for the load are all the buyer's responsibility — and all far easier to sort out before the pallet arrives than after. The tank outlet is 3/4".

Certification, stated plainly

Quincy lists ASME for the pressure vessel and UL and CSA for the electrical components of this machine. Those cover the tank and the electrics. They say nothing about your installation and they are not a substitute for whatever inspection your jurisdiction, your insurer or your own safety policy requires of a pressure vessel of this size on your site. Where a specific listing or filing is a condition of cover, check it against the data plate before purchase, and we will supply what the manufacturer publishes so you can put it in front of whoever asks.

Warranty

A 1-year factory warranty applies and extends to a 3-year "No Bull" warranty under Quincy's programme, subject to Quincy's conditions including registration of the unit. We will confirm in writing exactly what this model requires before you order. If a fault develops, leave the pump intact until the claim has been agreed — once it is apart, nobody can assess what failed.

Freight and delivery

Freight only, on a pallet, to the lower 48 states. A forklift or pallet jack is needed at the delivery point, or take terminal pickup and collect on a trailer. Residential delivery carries a residential fee. This item ships free, so there is nothing to add at checkout.

Inspect before signing: tank, guard, motor, gauges, pallet. Write any damage on the bill of lading in front of the driver — after a clean signature, a carrier claim is very difficult to pursue.
