The Victron Orion XS 1400 is a non-isolated DC-DC battery charger built for 12V and 24V systems: 9 to 35V in, 10 to 35V out, so it covers 12/12, 12/24, 24/12 and 24/24 dual-battery systems in vehicles, boats and off-grid setups. It delivers up to 50A of charge current, which is 1400W into a 24V battery and around 700W into a 12V one, giving a secondary battery bank high-current charging from the alternator or main battery rather than a partial trickle.

How it works

Rather than a voltage-sensitive relay passing through whatever the source battery offers, the Orion XS 1400 runs a proper multi-stage charge algorithm on the secondary battery, so it reaches full charge rather than stopping short. The non-isolated design shares a common ground between input and output, which suits vehicles and boats where both batteries reference the same chassis or hull. Where isolation between banks is required, a different unit from Victron's isolated Orion range is the correct choice instead.

Applications

Campervans, motorhomes, HGVs, vans and larger leisure craft with an auxiliary battery bank that has outgrown smaller DC-DC chargers all suit this unit. It works well for lithium auxiliary upgrades, where a genuine charge profile matters rather than an approximate one.

Installation notes

Fit this by a qualified auto-electrician or marine electrician who works with high-current DC systems regularly. At up to 50A, cable sizing, fusing and connection quality all matter. Confirm both battery banks share a common negative before wiring in, since the non-isolated topology depends on it. For lithium batteries, check the charge profile in VictronConnect before commissioning. This charger is not intended for grid-connected or AC-coupled use.
