The Orion-Tr Smart 48/12-30A is a galvanically isolated DC-DC charger that steps a 48V supply down to 12V, charging at up to 30A (360W). It suits installations where a secondary 12V battery needs charging from a 48V house bank, traction battery or DC bus, with no electrical connection between the two circuits. Built-in Bluetooth lets you configure and monitor it through the VictronConnect app, no extra hardware required.

Why galvanic isolation matters

A basic DC-DC converter just regulates output voltage. The Orion-Tr Smart applies a proper multi-stage charging profile instead, so a flat secondary battery draws full current until absorption voltage, then tapers correctly rather than sitting at a fixed voltage.

Isolation itself is a physical transformer barrier, not a software setting. On boats it helps prevent stray current corrosion between separate battery systems. In vehicles with dual battery setups it avoids chassis ground conflicts. In 48V off-grid or telecom systems feeding 12V loads, it gives a clean separation that simplifies fault-finding.

Monitoring and integration

VictronConnect Bluetooth comes built in, so there's no dongle or wired link needed to set charge voltages, absorption time or engine detection behaviour. A VE.Direct connection also allows integration into a wider Victron system, with data logged through a GX device or the VRM portal.

Installation notes

Fitting should be carried out by a qualified electrician or experienced system integrator. Correct cable sizing and fusing on both input and output sides is essential at these current levels, and the engine detection input must be wired correctly for source battery protection.
