Description
The Victron MultiPlus-II 12/5000/220-50 is a combined inverter and battery charger for 12V battery systems, built for installations that need a single unit rather than separate charger and inverter components. It delivers up to 5000VA of continuous AC output at 230V, with a 220A battery charger and a 50A AC transfer switch built in.
Key features of this battery charger inverter
- Inverter output, 5000VA continuous at 230V AC from a 12V DC battery bank.
- Charger, 220A built-in charge current for fast recharge from a generator or shore power.
- Transfer switch, 50A AC transfer switch with near-instant switchover, keeping connected loads supplied during a mains or generator failure.
- PowerControl, limits total current drawn from shore power or a generator to prevent overloading the source.
- PowerAssist, supplements AC input with inverter power when load demand exceeds the available input current.
- Dual AC outputs, AC-Out-1 stays live during a power cut; AC-Out-2 disconnects on battery operation, shedding non-essential loads automatically.
Product overview
Inside a single enclosure sit a true sine wave inverter, a multi-stage charger and an AC transfer switch. The 12V input suits systems built around 12V lithium or AGM battery banks, common on boats, vehicles and smaller off-grid sites. At 5000VA it can run substantial loads together, including air conditioning, power tools and several domestic appliances.
A 220A charge current is high for a 12V unit, so a large battery bank can be topped up quickly from a generator, cutting run time. PowerControl and PowerAssist work together where the AC input is current-limited, such as a marina shore power pedestal or a small generator: PowerControl caps the draw, and PowerAssist covers any shortfall from the battery so the rated load is still met without tripping the source breaker.
The two AC outputs suit installations with a mix of critical and non-critical loads. AC-Out-1 stays live whenever the unit is running; AC-Out-2 drops out on battery, useful for disconnecting water heaters or other chargers. Configuration and firmware updates run over VE.Bus, using a MK3-USB interface or a compatible GX device. Victron VE.Bus also supports remote monitoring via VictronConnect or Venus OS, and units can be run in parallel or three-phase configurations.
Applications
Off-grid cabins and remote properties running 12V battery banks that need high-capacity AC output. Marine vessels with 12V DC systems needing 230V AC onboard. Large motorhomes and expedition vehicles with heavy AC load demands. Backup power for critical loads in commercial or agricultural premises, and generator-assisted off-grid setups.
