The Victron Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-30A is a non-isolated DC-DC battery-to-battery charger built for 12V vehicle and marine dual-battery systems. It supplies up to 30A of charge current, delivering up to 360W from a 12V source battery, and is configured over Bluetooth using the VictronConnect app. It suits van conversions, motorhomes, narrowboats and off-grid mobile setups.

How it works

The Orion-Tr Smart non-isolated range uses a synchronous buck converter. Sharing a common negative between input and output makes it suited to installations where both battery banks sit within the same chassis ground, the usual arrangement in road vehicles and inland waterway craft. Configuration runs entirely through VictronConnect over Bluetooth, where charge voltage, absorption time, float voltage and tail current are set to match the service battery chemistry. For lithium service batteries the two-wire BMS port lets the BMS tell the charger to stop when the battery is full or a cell protection event occurs. Engine detection works from an input voltage threshold, so charging only starts once the alternator raises bus voltage above a configurable level.

The unit weighs 1.8kg and has a compact footprint, so it can be mounted in an engine bay, under a seat or in a battery compartment.

This charger is non-isolated and requires a shared negative between the source and service battery banks. It is not suitable where the two battery systems must be electrically separated, such as most marine installations with separate AC grounding.
