Triumph NTO-10A: the floor specification is published, not buried

Ask what stops a two-post lift installation and the answer is almost never the lift. It is the floor. A slab that is too thin, too weak or unknown turns a delivered lift into a concrete job, and most listings in this category simply do not say what they need. Triumph publishes it for the NTO-10A: a 4-inch slab at 3,000 PSI. You can check that against your own building today, before you spend anything, which is exactly the point.

The lift itself is a 10,000 lb overhead-style two-post with three-stage arms, driven by a 3 HP power unit on 220V single phase, raising a vehicle in about forty seconds and releasing its safety locks from a single point. It is built for commercial garages, service centres and home shops that regularly see full-size trucks and heavy pickups.

Will It Fit?

Take these numbers into your bay with a tape measure before you order. They are the manufacturer's; verifying them against your own building is your responsibility, and the slab item is the one people skip.

• Concrete. A 4-inch slab at 3,000 PSI. If you do not know what is under your floor covering, find out — core it, ask whoever poured it, or have it checked. An anchor bolt is only as strong as the concrete it is set into, and no amount of torque compensates for a thin slab.
• Ceiling. 145 inches overall for the structure, plus room for the vehicle you intend to raise. Check for lighting, ducting and sprinkler heads in the arc of the arms, not just the height at the centre of the bay.
• Floor width. 133 inches overall, with 107 inches — 8.75 ft — between the posts. Add door-opening room on at least one side.
• Drive-through. 96 inches, or 8 ft, of clear width between the carriages.
• Working height. 72 inches at the pads, which is 6 ft, with 68 inches of rise under the arms.
• Loading. Lowered height is 4.5 inches for low-slung vehicles.
• Power. 220V single phase for the 3 HP motor. Book the circuit before the crate arrives.

Three-stage arms: reach in both directions

A three-stage arm telescopes through three sections instead of two, which does two useful things at once. Extended, it reaches far enough back to pick up the frame rails of a long-wheelbase van or a crew-cab pickup. Retracted, it folds up short enough to get under a small car without the pad ending up somewhere the manufacturer never intended a jacking point to be. A two-stage arm has to compromise between those, and the compromise always shows up on whichever vehicle you happen to be working on that afternoon.

That range is the reason the same lift suits a general workshop and a specialist. If your day is one wheelbase, arm staging barely matters; if your day is whatever drives in, it decides whether a job takes five minutes to set up or twenty.

The overhead crossbar is a cable raceway

Overhead-style lifts put the beam across the top and leave the floor between the columns completely clear — no base plate to roll a transmission jack over, no lip for a creeper to catch, nothing collecting swarf and oil. The crossbar then earns its keep a second time by carrying the hydraulic lines and equalisation cables above head height, out of the working area, instead of routing them across the floor where they get stood on, run over and eventually damaged.

Each column anchors through a base plate of 18 x 17 inches, spreading the anchor load into the slab you checked in the first section. Lock release is single-point, so one control frees both columns, and there is an electric safety cutoff on the carriage travel.

Some commercial insurance policies, some fleet and municipal maintenance contracts, and some local building or fire code officials specifically require that shop lifting equipment carry an independent safety listing. Most home garages and a great many independent shops are under no such requirement at all. This ships as freight, not as a parcel. It travels on an LTL truck to addresses in the lower 48 states, and the delivery charge you see at checkout is a live carrier quote worked out for your own ZIP code rather than a figure typed into this page, so nothing here goes stale on you.

Two practical points decide whether the delivery day is uneventful. The first is unloading: somebody at the receiving end has to get the crate off the back of the truck. A forklift, a tractor with forks, or a telehandler will do it. If none of that is available to you, choose warehouse pickup instead and collect the crate on a trailer, because the freight terminal has the equipment to load you. The second is the address type. A delivery to a home is handled differently from a delivery to a commercial address and carries a residential fee, so tell us which one it is when you order rather than sorting it out on the doorstep.

Inspect the shipment before you sign for it. Walk the crate, look for punctures, crushed corners and shifted banding, and write what you find on the bill of lading while the driver is still there. A clean signature is the carrier's evidence that everything arrived intact, and it is very hard to argue with afterwards. Photographs taken at the tailgate are worth far more than photographs taken in the garage an hour later.

Triumph publishes its warranty terms in its own documentation rather than in this listing, and we would rather send you the current document than paraphrase a term that may since have changed. One rule matters more than the wording of the terms. If something fails, do not take it apart. Disassembling a component before the manufacturer has had the chance to inspect it is the most common reason a legitimate claim gets refused, because once it is in pieces nobody can establish what actually happened.
