Triumph NSS-8 Classic: the short-deck four-post

Four-post lifts are usually sold on capacity, and capacity is rarely what stops someone buying one. Length is. The NSS-8 Classic exists because a full-length four-post will not physically go into a great many garages: at 141 inches overall without the approach ramps, on runways of 132 inches, this is the short-deck version of the platform, and that single dimension is the reason to look at it rather than at a bigger deck.

The second reason follows from the first. It ships with a caster kit, so once it is assembled a single person can lift one end and roll the whole lift to the side of the shop. A four-post that moves is a four-post you can put away when you need the floor for something else, which is the whole argument for this style of lift in a two-car garage.

Rated at 8,000 lbs on ordinary 110V power, it does the two jobs a four-post is bought for: raising a car to a working height on its own wheels, and stacking one car above another to get a parking space back.

Will It Fit?

This is the section to read twice, because a four-post is bought on dimensions and returned on dimensions. All the figures are Triumph's; measuring your own building against them is your job alone.

• Floor length. 141 inches overall without the approach ramps. Add room for the ramps themselves, which have to live somewhere whether they are fitted or leaning on a wall, and add walking room at both ends.
• Floor width. 106 inches overall. Leave door-opening space on at least one side; a lift you cannot get out of is a lift you stop using.
• Ceiling. The lift stands 84 inches at the top of the columns, which is why it goes into rooms a two-post never will. If you intend to stack, the deciding number is not the lift height but the height of the car parked underneath plus the runway above it plus the roof of the car on top — measure your own vehicles, not the specification.
• Runways and track. Each runway is 18 inches wide with 37 inches between them, and the drive-through width is 93 inches, or 7.75 ft. Very narrow-track and very wide vehicles are both worth checking against those numbers before you order.
• Working height. Lift height is 72 inches at the runway, with 69 inches of clear height underneath — standing-up height for most people under most of the car.
• Power. 110V. No electrician, no dedicated circuit, no delay between delivery and first use — this is the practical difference between a four-post like this one and a heavy two-post.

Ten locks, and what they are actually for

The lift carries 10 locking positions per column, engaged by a mechanical safety system, so a raised car rests on steel rather than on hydraulic pressure. On a four-post the lock count matters for an unglamorous reason: storage. A stacked car sits on its locks for months at a time, and ten positions means parking it at the exact height that clears the vehicle underneath instead of at the nearest notch — several inches of headroom you would otherwise waste.

Drive-on service, and the storage case

Because the car sits on its own wheels, a four-post is the easier lift for anything that does not require the suspension to hang: exhaust work, fluid changes, rust-proofing, inspection, detailing the underside, running the engine while you are underneath. Drive-on ramps mean loading is a single manoeuvre with no arm placement and no hunting for a jacking point, which is why the format suits an owner who is not a technician. The storage case is simply arithmetic: two cars in the footprint of one, in a building you already pay for. The caster kit keeps that from being a permanent commitment — if the lift is in the way of a project next spring, you roll it aside instead of dismantling it.

Here is why it matters rather than why it sounds bad. Some commercial insurance policies, some fleet and municipal maintenance contracts, and some local building or fire code officials specifically require that shop lifting equipment carry an independent safety listing. Most home garages and a great many independent shops are under no such requirement at all. Shipping and delivery

This ships as freight, not as a parcel. It travels on an LTL truck to addresses in the lower 48 states, and the delivery charge you see at checkout is a live carrier quote worked out for your own ZIP code rather than a figure typed into this page, so nothing here goes stale on you.

Two practical points decide whether the delivery day is uneventful. The first is unloading: somebody at the receiving end has to get the crate off the back of the truck. A forklift, a tractor with forks, or a telehandler will do it. If none of that is available to you, choose warehouse pickup instead and collect the crate on a trailer, because the freight terminal has the equipment to load you. The second is the address type. A delivery to a home is handled differently from a delivery to a commercial address and carries a residential fee, so tell us which one it is when you order rather than sorting it out on the doorstep.

Inspect the shipment before you sign for it. Walk the crate, look for punctures, crushed corners and shifted banding, and write what you find on the bill of lading while the driver is still there. A clean signature is the carrier's evidence that everything arrived intact, and it is very hard to argue with afterwards. Photographs taken at the tailgate are worth far more than photographs taken in the garage an hour later.

Warranty and claims

Triumph publishes its warranty terms in its own documentation rather than in this listing, and we would rather send you the current document than paraphrase a term that may since have changed. Ask us for it before you order and we will give you the version that applies to this model and to the way you intend to use it, since commercial and residential use are not always covered identically.

One rule matters more than the wording of the terms. If something fails, do not take it apart. Disassembling a component before the manufacturer has had the chance to inspect it is the most common reason a legitimate claim gets refused, because once it is in pieces nobody can establish what actually happened. Stop using the equipment, photograph the failure where it sits, and call us first.
