Water is what actually ruins shop air, and the QT MAX is the version of Quincy's 80-gallon platform that comes fitted to deal with it. Two components do the work: an air-cooled aftercooler on the discharge, and an automatic tank drain on the receiver. The aftercooler drops the temperature of the air leaving the pump so the moisture in it condenses out there, in the machine, instead of downstream in your lines. The automatic drain then removes what collects in the tank without anyone remembering to open a valve on a Friday afternoon.
That combination is unusual at this size. It matters because condensate is the reason air lines rust, impact tools seize, and paint jobs come back with fisheye. This unit produces 22.6 CFM at 175 PSI from a two-stage cast-iron pump running at 1,725 RPM on a 208V three-phase supply.
Why an Aftercooler Changes the Air You Get
Compressed air leaves a two-stage pump hot, and hot air holds a great deal of water vapour. Put that straight into a receiver and the air cools slowly, dropping its moisture as liquid in the tank and, worse, as vapour that condenses further along the pipe run where it can reach a tool.
An aftercooler forces the temperature drop to happen immediately, in a heat exchanger designed to be drained, rather than gradually across your distribution system. The water separates where you can get rid of it. It is not a substitute for a dryer on genuinely moisture-critical work, but it removes the bulk of the problem before any downstream treatment has to deal with it, and for a lot of shops it is the difference between usable air and air that needs babysitting.
The Automatic Tank Drain
Every receiver accumulates condensate, and every manual drain valve depends on a human. Water left standing in a tank corrodes it from the inside, which is a safety issue on a pressure vessel and not merely a maintenance one. An automatic drain removes the human from that loop. On a machine that will be in service for many years, it is one of the few features that protects the tank itself rather than the pump.
Running Slowly, on Purpose
The pump turns at 1,725 RPM. That is deliberate and it is the single clearest indicator of an industrial machine rather than a consumer one, because piston speed, bearing load, oil temperature and noise all rise with shaft speed. Turning slowly, the cast-iron two-stage pump delivers 22.6 CFM at 175 PSI while staying cool enough to keep its oil in condition.
Lubrication is splash type with a special low-oil protection system and an extra-capacity oil reserve. The low-oil protection is the important half: splash lubrication fails abruptly when the level drops, and a sensor that stops the machine before that happens turns a catastrophic seizure into a service call. The larger reserve gives the oil more thermal mass and a longer working life between changes.
Cooling, Starting and Rods
A high-efficiency finned intercooler sits between the two stages, cooling the charge before the high-pressure cylinder so the second stage does less work for the same pressure. Aluminium cylinder heads shed heat quickly at the hottest part of the pump. Connecting rods are a two-piece design, keeping the reciprocating assembly simple and serviceable. A magnetic starter is fitted, giving the motor thermal overload protection and contactor-controlled starting.
Will It Fit?
The 80-gallon tank is vertical: 37" long, 24" wide, 74" tall, 720 lbs. Check ceiling height before anything else and leave clearance above the machine for head and belt access. It wants a flat, level, load-bearing floor, and room at the base to reach the drain and the outlet.
The supply is 208V three-phase, which is what many leased commercial buildings actually carry, and it is not interchangeable with the other voltage builds of this same compressor. Quincy refers breaker selection to a certified electrician rather than publishing a figure, since the correct device depends on conductors, run length and code. Confirm the voltage at your panel, and treat the circuit, site preparation and permits as your responsibility.

Certification, Honestly
The receiver is an ASME certified pressure vessel, and the manufacturer's data records a CSA marking with it. Those are two separate certifications covering two separate things: the pressure vessel code governs how the tank was designed, welded and inspected, while the electrical marking covers the motor and controls. Neither is evidence for the other.
Check the data plate on the machine when it arrives, since that is the document an inspector or an insurer will read and the only one that travels with the unit. If a specific listing is required by your code, your lease or your insurance policy, verify it against the plate before installation.
Shipping and Delivery
Freight to the lower 48 states. The compressor weighs 720 lbs and ships upright on a pallet, so plan for a forklift, a loading dock, or a pickup arranged with the freight terminal. Delivery to a residential address carries a residential fee.
Inspect the machine before you sign the bill of lading. Look for damage to the guards and the aftercooler, a receiver that has moved in its bracing, and oil on the pallet, and note everything in writing while the driver is present. Signing clean and reporting later leaves you with very little.
Warranty
A 1-year factory warranty applies, extending to a 3-year "No Bull" warranty when Quincy's conditions are met. Those conditions are set at purchase and typically require the matching maintenance kit to be bought with the compressor and the unit to be registered with the manufacturer, so deal with both when you order. The supplied warranty documentation carries the governing terms.
If a fault develops, raise the claim before anything is dismantled. A pump or motor opened before inspection is the most common reason a valid claim is turned down.
