Stencils can be used as a two layer design by separating the negative outside layer and the positive inside layer of the stencil design from each other. This requires you to cut through all the notches on the outside edges of the design with an exacto knife or scissors, so the stencil separates the positive design layer from the negative outside design layer. You will now be able to use both layers to outline, shade highlight and do drop shadows on your artwork.
