Description
Hofmann geodyna 9000p: a diagnostic machine that happens to balance wheels
A conventional balancer answers one question — where does the weight go? — and answers it from three measurements an operator types in. The geodyna 9000p answers a much larger set of questions and takes almost nothing on trust. Five high-resolution laser cameras scan the complete rim and tire profile, and from that scan the machine works out the wheel dimensions, the balancing mode, the number and position of the spokes, where weights already are, run-out on both the tire and the rim, and whether the assembly has a match-mounting or geometric problem at all. The technician clamps the wheel, closes the guard, and lets it look.
That is the difference worth paying for. Removing hand-keyed dimensions removes the most common source of a confidently wrong balance result — the machine that produces a precise weight in the wrong place because a number was mistyped, and sends the customer away with the same vibration they arrived with.
Will it fit, and what will it take?
The site requirements are modest for a machine of this capability, but they are worth confirming before delivery.
- Dimensions (L x W x H), unit only: 57" x 38.9" x 67.3" (1,448 x 988 x 1,710 mm).
- Net weight: 341 lbs (155 kg).
- Power requirements: 230 VAC 1Ph 50/60 Hz.
- Maximum wheel diameter: 37" (940mm).
- Maximum wheel weight: 154 lbs (70 kg).
Two of our sources round those dimensions differently: the specification table gives 38.9" and 67.3" where our summary fields carry 39" and 67". The difference is immaterial for planning a bay but we would rather show you both than pretend to a precision we cannot verify. Note also that the dimensions are the unit only — allow clearance for the guard to swing and for a technician to load a wheel from the side.
Measuring ranges, and why there are three sets of them
The specification quotes rim ranges three times over, for automatic, semi-automatic and manual acquisition, and the numbers are different in each case. That is not padding: it tells you where the cameras take over from the operator, which is the practical envelope of the machine.
| Automatic rim diameter range | 14-26" (356-660 mm) |
|---|---|
| Automatic rim width range | 3-15.8" (76-401 mm) |
| Automatic offset range | 4.7-16.3" (120-414 mm) |
| Semi-automatic rim diameter range | 8-30" (203-762 mm) |
| Manual rim diameter range | 8-32" (203-813 mm) |
| Manual rim width range | 1-20" (25-508 mm) |
| Shaft diameter | 40 mm |
| Shaft length | 225 mm |
| Measuring speed | < 200 rpm |
| Angular resolution | ±0.35° |
Read it this way: inside the automatic ranges the machine does the work itself; outside them, semi-automatic and manual entry extend the envelope to 8-32" (203-813 mm) of rim diameter so that an unusual wheel is still a job you can take rather than one you turn away.
Run-out, and the vibration a balance will never fix
Some vibrations are not imbalance. A tire can be perfectly balanced and still shake a car because it is not round, or because the rim is not true, and a shop without the means to measure that ends up adding weight to a problem weight cannot solve. The 9000p scans for radial tire run-out, bead seat run-out on the bare rim, and radial and lateral rim run-out on both sides.
Run-out force vectoring goes a step further by estimating the loaded behaviour of the assembly: it determines the virtual loaded run-out contact patch and calculates the spring rate from tread width, sidewall height, surface irregularities and estimated tire pressure. In plain terms, it models how the wheel behaves with the car's weight on it rather than spinning free. That is the measurement that tells a technician whether the fix is weight, a match mount, or a different tire.
Evidence the customer can see
Because the cameras produce a visual scan of the rim and tire, the machine can show a customer what it found rather than assert it. That matters commercially more than it does technically: a driver who is shown the profile of a worn or damaged tire is a driver making an informed decision, and a shop that can produce visual evidence is a shop having fewer arguments. Tread and sidewall analysis feeds the same conversation, and the wear-out prediction estimates when a tire will reach the end of its life so a replacement can be planned rather than sprung.
The features that pay for themselves on volume
Advanced spoke detection finds the spokes and places weights where they are hidden behind them, which is the difference between a balanced alloy wheel and a balanced alloy wheel a customer complains about. Wheel data freeze stores the data captured from the first rim in a set of identical wheels so the remaining three do not need to be measured again — a straightforward saving on every four-wheel job. Smart profile chooses the balancing program automatically from the rim dimensions held in memory and the imbalance actually measured, so the operator is not selecting modes from a menu. Power clamp wheel clamping holds the assembly on the shaft.
There is also an EZ-Collets mobile app, free from the Apple and Google stores with email activation, which helps a technician pick the right collet, flange or quick plate for a given vehicle and gives tire and rim information alongside it. Choosing the wrong collet is a common, invisible source of measurement error, so an app that removes the guesswork is worth more than it sounds.
Perfect For
- Tire retailers who want the balancer to help sell the tire, with visible evidence rather than assertion.
- High-volume fitting bays, where wheel data freeze and automatic acquisition cut the per-wheel time on sets.
- Shops chasing comeback vibrations that a conventional balancer cannot explain.
- Dealerships and specialists handling alloy and spoked wheels where weight placement is a cosmetic issue too.
What is included
The machine is described with power clamp wheel clamping and the camera and software features above. Our data does not itemise the collets, flanges or quick plates supplied with it, and those are exactly the parts that decide whether a given wheel can be mounted properly, so ask us to confirm the mounting kit in writing before you order rather than assuming the app's recommendation is in the box.
Certification and compliance, stated honestly
We hold no record of a third-party safety certification for this balancer and will not imply one. A manufacturer's own conformity declaration and an independent listing from a testing body are different documents, and it is generally the second that an insurer or a workplace inspector has in mind. If your cover or a customer contract depends on it, ask us before ordering and we will request the paperwork from the manufacturer. The electrical connection remains a matter for your local code and your electrician.
Delivery, installation and site access
This machine ships as freight, not as a parcel, and it travels crated on a pallet. Delivery, setup and instruction arrangements for Hofmann equipment are set out in the Pick Up and Delivery section further down this page, and warehouse collection is offered on much of this range — tell us at the time of order which you want, because the two are booked differently. Shipping is to addresses in the contiguous United States.
Three things are the buyer's responsibility whichever route you choose. Measure the path from the delivery point to the working position, including door widths and any turn a crated machine has to make. If the delivery address is a home rather than a commercial address, say so before you order — residential delivery is arranged differently and a residential fee applies. And inspect the crate before you sign: note any damage, crushed corner or shifted strapping on the delivery receipt at the moment of delivery, and photograph it. A signed clean receipt makes a damage claim very difficult to pursue afterwards, and that is the single most common way a buyer ends up out of pocket on freight equipment.
Warranty
Warranty terms for this machine are published on our warranty claims page rather than quoted here, so that what you read is the current policy rather than a figure copied into a description and left to go stale. One practical warning that applies to every powered machine we sell: if something fails, contact us before disassembling the unit or attempting an internal repair. Stripping an assembly down before the claim is raised routinely voids the cover, and it also destroys the evidence the manufacturer needs to see.
