Description

Cool Boss CB-36 Evaporative Air Cooler — 36" Fan, Five-Panel Media Wall

The fan gets the model number, but the five Honeycool media panels are what actually cool your building. The CB-36 carries five of them, each 30" high, 13" wide and 6" deep — the largest evaporative surface in the Cool Boss fixed-louver range, and the reason this unit does something a very large fan cannot.

Here is the physics in one paragraph, because it is the thing evaporative cooler listings never explain. A fan does not lower temperature; it moves air. Cooling happens when water evaporates off the media, taking heat out of the air passing through it. So the drop in temperature you feel is governed by how much wetted surface the air has to cross and how well the media holds water — not by the diameter of the blade. A big fan in front of a small media pack moves a lot of warm air. Five deep panels in front of a 36" fan is what makes this a cooler rather than a very enthusiastic fan.

The panels themselves are a resin-coated honeycomb structure. The coating is not decoration: it is what stops water pooling in the media, which is where mineral scale and smell start. Cool Boss puts the water-efficiency gain from that design at up to 30% against other evaporative coolers.

A 115 gallon reservoir, and why the number matters

The CB-36 holds 115 gallons of water and consumes roughly 4 to 5.3 gallons an hour depending on how hard you run it. That ratio is the difference between a machine that works and a machine somebody has to babysit — a small-tank cooler in a hot workshop is a refill errand every couple of hours, and the errand is what stops getting done in August.

If you can reach it with a garden hose, the reservoir auto-refills and the question disappears entirely; there is an automatic water source shutoff and an inlet flow control so it manages its own level. If you cannot — an event field, a loading yard, a site with no tap — the tank is the runtime, and this is the biggest one in the range.

Water flow and fan speed are both adjustable from the soft-touch LED panel or the remote, which is a genuine efficiency control rather than a convenience: on a merely warm day you can throttle the water and stretch the tank a long way.

Running cost, and the wiring you do not need

The CB-36 runs on 110V, 60Hz, 1Ph — ordinary household current, through a GFCI plug. No three-phase supply, no dedicated circuit installation, no electrician. That is the practical case for evaporative cooling in a workshop or warehouse: mechanical air conditioning at this coverage would mean plant, ducting and a serious electrical project, and Cool Boss states this unit uses up to 70% less energy than conventional mechanical cooling.

It is worth being clear about where evaporative cooling works. It cools by evaporating water into the air, so it performs best in dry heat and loses effect as humidity climbs, and it wants ventilation — an open door or a roller shutter — so the moist air has somewhere to go. In a sealed, humid room it will disappoint you. In a hot dry workshop with the doors open, it is real cooling at a fraction of the running cost.

Confirm the coverage before you order

Published figures for airflow and coverage differ. Both pairs are set out below, each attributed to its source.

  • Airflow. The description text says the CB-36 delivers 12,615 CFM. The specification table on this same page gives maximum airflow as 14,890 CFM.
  • Coverage. The description says it cools areas up to 3,125 square feet. The specification table says 3,690 sq. ft.

Each pair may well describe the same machine measured two ways — a rated figure at a working fan speed against a maximum, for instance — and that is what we will have Cool Boss put in writing. Coverage in particular is the number people buy on. Tell us the size and layout of the space and we will confirm the current figures with Cool Boss in writing before you commit. A cooler bought on an optimistic square-footage claim is a cooler that underperforms forever.

The parts that are not about cooling

Three built-in features change what this machine is used for.

The adjustable 80W outdoor-rated floodlight puts out 4000 lumens — enough to light a working bay or a section of warehouse from the unit itself, which matters at an outdoor event, in a yard, or anywhere the cooler is already positioned where the work is.

The Bluetooth® audio player is exactly what it sounds like and is a morale feature, openly. The built-in anion negative air ionizer is the one worth understanding: it charges particles so airborne dust and allergens clump and settle rather than staying in suspension. In a workshop that generates fine dust all day, that is a real difference in how the air feels by mid-afternoon.

The fan itself is a 36" (914 mm) axial-flow design driven by a 1/3 HP motor, moving air through a venturi aperture that concentrates its velocity — a high volume of air at relatively low blade speed, which is both quieter and less power-hungry than forcing the same airflow through a smaller blade. Expect 70 to 90 decibels depending on speed, which is a working machine rather than a quiet one.

Perfect for

  • Warehouses and distribution floors where ducted air conditioning was never going to be affordable.
  • Large workshops, fabrication bays and paint prep areas with roller doors open through the summer.
  • Outdoor events, marquees and hospitality — the floodlight and audio player earn their place here.
  • Agricultural buildings, kennels and stables, where ventilation is constant and dry heat is the problem.

Space, weight and the practical stuff

The unit measures 65" x 44" x 85" and weighs 400 lbs empty. Add 115 gallons of water and it becomes a machine you position once and leave, so think about where it should live before it arrives — and remember an evaporative cooler wants to be pointed into the space with a path for air to escape, not tucked into a corner. It is stackable, and it rides on durable swivel casters, so moving it empty across a flat floor is manageable.

Shipping dimensions are 69" x 47" x 83" at 425 lbs. The housing is high-density polyethylene with an antibacterial additive — impact-tolerant, UV-tolerant and, unlike a steel cabinet, unbothered by being a machine full of water. A protective cover comes as standard, an extra-long power cord is fitted, and there is a built-in timer.

Certification

The CB-36 is described by Cool Boss as UL® certified, and it ships with a GFCI plug — appropriate, and genuinely important, on a mains-powered appliance whose whole job is to hold and move water. That is the safety claim the product makes and it is the one we repeat.

No other approval is recorded in our data for this unit. If your site rules, your insurer or an event venue require a particular certificate on plant you bring in, ask us before you order and we will get written confirmation of exactly what this model holds rather than leaving you to infer it.

Shipping and delivery

At 425 lbs on a pallet this is a freight shipment within the lower 48 states. You will need a forklift, a dock or enough people and the right equipment to get it down safely — and a route into the building that a machine this size will actually pass through. Cool Boss pick-up locations are listed further down this page if collecting suits you better; a residential delivery address carries a residential fee.

Inspect the pallet with the driver present, note any damage on the bill of lading before signing, and photograph the crate before breaking it down. Plastic housings travel well but they do not survive a forklift tine, and that is exactly the sort of damage a clean signature makes hard to claim.

Warranty

Cool Boss states a 36-month warranty on this unit — three years, which is a long term for equipment that lives outdoors and handles water.

Two things protect it. Do not disassemble a failed unit before the claim is opened; the failed part normally has to be inspected as it failed, and a stripped machine is the usual reason a valid claim is refused. And keep the media clean and the reservoir drained when the cooler is standing idle for a long period — stagnant water in evaporative media is the fastest way to a smell, scale and a service call that is nobody's warranty problem but your own.
