Chicago Pneumatic QRS15 — a 15 HP rotary screw built in Italy and rated for continuous running

The most useful fact about this machine is one the spec list states in three words and never explains: it is rated 100% duty. A piston compressor has to stop and cool; this one does not. It runs for as long as your shop draws air — the difference between keeping up with two techs on impact guns all afternoon and falling behind by lunchtime.

The second fact worth knowing is where it comes from. Chicago Pneumatic's rotary screw compressors are manufactured in Italy by Atlas Copco — described in this product's own listing as the world's largest air compressor manufacturer. That shows up in the parts you will eventually replace: a spin-on oil filter and separator rather than a sealed assembly.

Add 15 HP, a 132 Gallon horizontal tank and 69 dBA of running noise, and this is a machine sized for a working automotive shop rather than a hobby garage.

Two output figures to confirm before you order

Published figures for this compressor's rated output differ, and the number decides whether the machine keeps up with your tools, so both are set out below with their sources.

• This product's listing and its maximum-pressure field describe it as 54.9 CFM @ 125 psi, with unload pressure also at 125 psi. A separate field on the same product rounds the flow to 55 CFM.
• The manufacturer's specification block attached to this product instead reads 51 CFM @ 150 psi, with unload pressure at 150 psi.

They are not as contradictory as they first look — a rotary screw set for higher pressure generally delivers less volume, so this reads like one machine at two pressure settings. But "reads like" is not good enough when you are matching a compressor to a shop full of air tools. 69 dBA, and why it changes where you can put it

Rotary screws are quieter than piston machines by design: meshing rotors compress air in a continuous motion instead of a piston slamming up and down. At 69 dBA this one can sit inside the workshop rather than in a shed.

That has a consequence beyond comfort: the shorter the air line run, the less pressure you lose on the way to the tool. A compressor exiled to an outbuilding because of noise costs you performance at the far end of the pipe. The assembly is also vibration isolated — vibration is what walks a machine across a floor, works fittings loose and puts a hum through a building.

Will It Fit? Siting and services

Confirming space, power and ventilation before ordering is the buyer's responsibility, and the power question comes first because it is the one that cannot be improvised.

• Power: a 208-230/460V 3 Phase TEFC motor. If your building has single-phase power only, this compressor is not the one — check before you order, not after delivery.
• Motor enclosure: TEFC — totally enclosed fan cooled, the specification you want where a motor lives in dust and aerosol.

Two things this machine does not include, stated plainly so nobody finds out on installation day: there is no integrated air dryer and no electronic drain valve. If you spray paint or run air-driven instrumentation, budget for downstream drying. And without an electronic drain, clearing condensate from the tank is a manual job somebody has to remember — the most common way a good tank is ruined.

Load, no-load and timed shutdown

The QRS15 runs a load/no-load control scheme with a timed shutdown. When demand stops the compressor unloads rather than continuing to build pressure, and if demand does not return within the set period it shuts down instead of idling. That saves the electricity of spinning a motor for nothing and the wear that goes with it — so the machine works hard when the shop is busy and gets out of the way when it is not, without anyone switching it off at the wall.

Not included: an air dryer, an electronic drain valve, and the factory authorized start-up described under Warranty. Downstream filtration, piping and electrical installation are separate — confirm anything your order depends on with us in writing first.

Approvals

The control panel on this machine is approved by UL, cUL and CSA, and is housed in a NEMA 1 enclosure. Those approvals cover the electrical control gear, which is the part an electrician and, in some jurisdictions, an inspector will look at.

Be precise about what that does and does not tell you: an approval on the control panel is a statement about the panel. It is not a whole-machine certification, and it does not replace a pressure vessel inspection regime where one applies. Installation to local electrical code is your electrician's responsibility. If your site carries a specific inspection or insurance requirement, ask us before ordering and we will establish the documentation position for this model in writing.

Shipping and delivery

This compressor ships as freight within the lower 48 states, free of charge.

At 622 lbs on a 132 Gallon tank this is a forklift delivery, not a two-person lift off a tailboard. Arrange equipment at the delivery point or collect from the carrier's terminal. A residential delivery address carries a residential fee.

Inspect it before you sign. Check tank, panel, fittings and packaging with the driver present and write any damage or shortage onto the bill of lading before signing. A clean signature records that the freight arrived intact, and a claim raised afterwards is a much harder case.

Warranty

This compressor carries a 1 Year warranty as standard. A 5 Year warranty is available instead, on the condition that the machine is commissioned through a factory authorized start-up — the manufacturer's own literature describes a typical fee of $350 for that service.

Two caveats. That fee is described as typical rather than fixed and is charged by the commissioning engineer, not by us — treat it as an indication and get a current quotation. And a start-up is worth having regardless of the warranty term: a rotary screw commissioned correctly, with rotation direction, oil level and control settings checked by someone who does it daily, tends to have a long and uneventful life.
