Description
BelAire QP338VLE: three-phase quiet air, without buying a rotary screw
If your building already has three-phase service, the usual advice when you complain about compressor noise is to move up to a rotary screw. Screws are quiet, and they are also a different class of purchase: higher price, a different service regime, and a machine that prefers to run continuously rather than start and stop with the work.
The QP338VLE offers the other route. It is an ordinary two-stage cast iron piston compressor — familiar, serviceable, start-stop by nature — sitting inside a sound enclosure that brings it down to 69 dBA. BelAire's own framing is that the machine has the noise level of a rotary screw, at less than half the noise of a standard piston unit. The motor is 7.5-HP, 3-Phase, on 208-230V, and the tank is an 80-Gallon vertical ASME vessel rated to 175 PSI.
Why three-phase changes the calculation
A three-phase motor delivers power more evenly than a single-phase one. Torque arrives in overlapping pulses rather than in gaps, which is why three-phase motors of a given rating tend to start more gently, run cooler and draw less current per conductor than their single-phase equivalents. On a compressor that will start and stop through a working day, those are not abstract benefits — they show up as less heat in the motor and less shock through the drive on every start.
The practical condition is simply that you must already have three-phase service, or be willing to install a converter. If your panel is single-phase, this is the wrong version of this machine and there is a single-phase build to order instead.
A magnetic starter comes with the compressor. On a three-phase motor that is not a nicety: it is the device providing thermal overload protection, and having it supplied means your electrician is wiring to a starter rather than sourcing one.
Will It Fit?
- Electrical service. 3-Phase, 208-230V. Verify at the panel before ordering.
- Circuit sizing. BelAire publish neither an amp draw nor a breaker size for this model. Their specification says to consult a certified electrician, and we will not improve on that by guessing. Bring your electrician the nameplate data on arrival, or ask us to obtain the figures from BelAire in writing first.
- Plan area. 38.2" by 24.3". Small for the output, because the tank is vertical.
- Height. 80". Add access room above it for panel removal and pump service.
- Clearance for air. The enclosure works by drawing air through with a high-flow fan. Boxing the machine into a corner, blocking a grille or removing panels defeats the cooling design. Keep the manual's clearances on every side.
- Weight. 537 lbs., and tall. Moving it is a question of route and uprighting, not of raw strength.
Preparing the site, providing ventilation and arranging the electrical work and any permits fall to the customer. We will verify any published figure against factory documentation on request.
What the enclosure is, and the pump inside it
The shroud is high-strength ABS, with a high-flow fan drawing cooling air across the pump. Enclosing a compressor normally means trapping heat; the fan is what stops that, and it is why BelAire claim the machine runs cooler as well as quieter rather than trading one against the other.
Inside, the pump is two-stage with a cast iron cylinder and splash lubrication. The two stages exist so that air can be compressed, cooled, and compressed again — the reason a machine of this size can hold 175 PSI without cooking its own pump. An integrated aftercooler then takes heat out of the discharge, which drops moisture out of the air before it reaches your tools. Cast iron is used for the cylinder because it keeps its bore shape under prolonged heat; lighter materials distort, and a distorted bore is a pump that starts drinking oil.
Behind the panels, where you cannot see or hear a developing fault, two automatic protections do the watching: low oil level protection and a high temperature shutdown. On an enclosed machine those are the difference between a service call and a replacement pump.
Perfect For
- Three-phase workshops that need quiet. The whole point of this build.
- Shops considering a rotary screw purely for noise. This is the cheaper way to solve that specific problem.
- Start-stop duty. Piston machines suit intermittent demand better than screws do.
- Premises with neighbours, offices or customers within earshot.
- Floor plans with no room to spare. A vertical 80-Gallon tank on a 38.2" by 24.3" footprint.

A number we are choosing not to print. The air volume this compressor delivers is stored in the product data as a bare figure with no unit attached to it, so we cannot responsibly restate it — and the meta description Shopify currently shows against this product quotes a motor rating that contradicts the specification. Neither is repeated here. If delivered volume is the figure your buying decision rests on, ask us in writing and we will have BelAire confirm it before you order.
Certification, stated honestly
The certification recorded for this compressor is ASME, and it applies where it matters most: the tank is an ASME certified vessel and the relief devices are ASME safety valves. Those are the components containing and releasing 175 PSI.
Nothing in this product's data claims a listing from an independent testing laboratory for the electrical assembly as a whole. That is a separate approval from a separate body, and a pressure vessel rating does not stand in for it. Depending on your insurer, your local electrical inspector, or a workplace safety scheme you operate under, such a listing may be required for equipment installed in a commercial building. Establish what applies to you before purchase rather than at inspection.
Shipping and delivery
This is a freight item, shipped within the lower 48 states, with the cost calculated live at checkout for your own address. Before it ships, decide how it comes off the truck — a forklift on site, a dock, or collecting it yourself from the carrier's terminal. Deliveries to residential addresses carry an extra fee and you will see it at checkout. On arrival, examine the crate first: any damage must be written onto the bill of lading in front of the driver, because once you have signed clean the carrier's obligation is largely discharged.
Warranty
The product data records a 2 Year consumer warranty for this model, and the warranty document linked on this page is the controlling version. Two habits protect any claim under it: keep the machine's service record, and never take a failed assembly apart before it has been assessed. Photograph it as it sits, leave it intact and speak to us first — a stripped component is rarely accepted afterwards.
