Description
BelAire QP338VE: a piston compressor that runs at 66 dBA
The QP338VE is BelAire's Quiet Performance answer to the oldest complaint in a busy shop: the compressor is the loudest machine in the building, and it starts whenever it feels like it. This one is rated as low as 66 dBA because the pump is wrapped in a high-strength ABS sound enclosure with a high-flow cooling fan, rather than sitting bare on top of the tank. It is a 5 HP, two-stage, cast-iron machine on an 80 gallon vertical ASME tank, wired for 208-230V 3-Phase power, and the magnetic starter is already fitted.
If you have ever put a conversation on hold because the compressor kicked in, that dBA figure is the whole reason this model exists. Everything else about it is conventional heavy-duty compressor engineering; the enclosure is the part that changes the room.
Will it fit, and will it run?
This is a vertical machine, so it takes floor space roughly the size of a filing cabinet and puts the rest of itself in the air. The listed footprint is 38.2 in. long by 24.3 in. wide, and the unit stands 80 in. tall at a listed weight of 513 lb. Measure your ceiling and, just as important, the swing of any overhead door track and the height of the doorway you intend to walk it through. Eighty inches clears most shop doors, but not all of them, and a fully assembled vertical compressor is not something you tip over to get it inside.
Power is the part that decides whether this model is the right one for you. It is a 3-Phase machine on a 208-230V supply. If your building has single-phase service only, this is the wrong model, and no adapter fixes that honestly. BelAire's own data sheet does not publish an amp draw or a recommended breaker for this unit and instead says to consult a certified electrician, so we will not invent one here. Have a licensed electrician confirm your service, your conductor sizing and your disconnect before the machine arrives.
Siting is the customer's responsibility. The unit needs a level, solid floor that will carry its weight, clearance around the enclosure so the cooling fan can actually pull air, and a drain path for the tank. Electrical connection, any permits and any inspection required where you are all sit on your side of the line.
Why the enclosure is more than a noise cover
A box around a compressor can make it quieter and cook it at the same time. The QP338VE handles that with a high-flow fan and an enclosure designed as part of the cooling path, so air is pulled across the pump rather than trapped around it. A pump that runs cooler carries less moisture into the tank and is easier on its own valves and oil, which is why the same design decision shows up twice on the spec sheet: quieter, and cooler.
The practical effect is that this compressor can sit inside the working area instead of being exiled to a back room or an outbuilding. That saves you the run of pipe, the pressure drop that comes with it, and the moisture that a long uninsulated line collects.
The two-stage cast-iron pump
Two-stage means the air is compressed once, cooled, and compressed again. It matters for two reasons. First, it is how the machine reaches a working pressure of 175 PSI without punishing itself; a single-stage pump doing the same job runs far hotter. Second, the interstage cooling plus the integrated aftercooler drops the temperature of the air going into the tank, so a good share of the water condenses out before it reaches your pipework instead of arriving at the spray gun.
The cylinder is solid cast iron, splash lubricated, with an oil sight glass so a level check is a glance rather than a job. Low oil level protection and a high-temperature shutdown are built in, which is the difference between a pump that stops and a pump that seizes. The pump is rated at 18.5 cubic feet per minute measured at 100 PSI.
Perfect for
- Professional automotive and body shops with 3-Phase service, running impact tools, ratchets, sanders and spray equipment through the day.
- Fabrication and industrial spaces where the compressor has to live in the same room as the people and the noise level is a real workplace issue.
- Shops short on floor space — the vertical tank buys back the footprint a horizontal 80 gallon machine would take.
- Anywhere a quiet room matters: dealership service areas, detail bays, teaching workshops and any space where you take phone calls.
What is included
The compressor ships as a complete, factory-assembled unit: pump, motor, 80 gallon ASME vertical tank, the ABS sound enclosure and high-flow fan, integrated aftercooler, ASME safety valves, pressure gauge, automatic pressurized tank drain (pressure-operated, not electronic) and the magnetic starter, which on many competing units is a separate purchase. BelAire ships it wet, meaning the pump is already filled with oil and ready to run. Air dryer is not included. Every unit is 100% factory tested at full pressure before it leaves the plant.

Certification, stated plainly
The tank and the safety valves on this machine are ASME rated, and the unit is factory tested at full pressure. That is a pressure-vessel standard: it speaks to the tank holding air safely, and it says nothing about the electrical side of the machine. BelAire's published data for this model lists no third-party North American electrical safety listing, and we are not going to imply one it does not claim. If your insurer, your corporate safety policy or your local inspector requires that kind of listing on shop equipment, ask us to confirm what documentation ships with this unit before you order, and get the answer in writing.
Shipping and delivery
This compressor ships by freight to the lower 48 states. It arrives on a pallet, and you need to be able to take it off the truck — a forklift, a loading dock, or a few strong people and a pallet jack on a flat approach. If none of that is available, terminal pickup is usually the better answer, and we can arrange it. Deliveries to a residential address carry a residential fee, which is quoted with your shipping at checkout.
Inspect the shipment before you sign. Walk around the pallet, look at the enclosure panels, the gauge and the tank for dents or scrapes, and write any damage you find on the delivery receipt before the driver leaves. A signed clear receipt makes a freight damage claim very hard to win, and that is the single most common expensive mistake on a machine this size.
Warranty
BelAire covers this compressor under its factory warranty; the consumer warranty term listed for this model is 2 Year. The warranty document supplied with the unit is the controlling text, so read it before you need it. One practical warning that applies to every compressor we sell: do not disassemble the pump, the motor or the electrical box before you have opened a claim. Taking it apart first is the fastest way to void the cover, even when the fault is genuinely the manufacturer's. Call us, describe the symptom, and let us start the claim.
