Atlas TC289 Extra Large Rim-Clamp Tire Changer with Beadblaster

The specification that decides whether this machine is relevant to you is not the turntable, the motor or the Beadblaster. It is the bead breaker, and specifically the fact that it has two working positions: one for wheels up to 14 3/4" wide, a second for wheels up to 18 1/2". That is how a single machine covers a passenger car rim and the wide rim on a one-ton truck without either job being a fight.

Everything else on the TC289 is sized to match. The turntable is the extra-large one, taking a tire up to 47" in diameter, and it is why a general service department stops turning away the dual-rear-wheel van, the one-ton pickup and the farm tire that the shop's existing changer simply will not accept.

Two Bead Breaker Positions, and Why One Is Not Enough

Breaking a bead is a shear operation. The blade has to land immediately alongside the rim flange — too far out and it slides off the sidewall, too far in and it lands on the rim. Where that line sits moves as the wheel gets wider.

A changer with one fixed breaker geometry is set up for the middle of its range, and at the extremes it works badly: the widest wheels get struck too far inboard, the narrowest at an angle. Neither ruins a rim on the first attempt. Both are how rims get quietly damaged over a career, and the customer whose alloy comes back marked does not care that the machine was within spec.

Two positions, plus the adjustable breaker plate this machine carries, means you set the geometry to the wheel in front of you. It takes seconds and no rim-protection measure available to you costs less.

The Clamping Window Is Really Three Windows

The turntable jaws are not fixed. They relocate to three mounting positions along the slide, and each position gives a different range rather than simply a wider one:

• Clamping externally — gripping the outer flange — 11 7/8" to 26" in the first position, 12 7/8" to 27" in the second, 13 3/4" to 28" in the third.
• Clamping internally — gripping inside the barrel — 13 7/8" to 27 7/8", then 14 5/8" to 28 7/8", then 15 5/8" to 29 7/8".

Two consequences. Set the jaws for the wheels you actually run: a rim clamped mid-travel is held far more securely than one clamped at the end of a jaw's reach. And use the internal grip on anything with a finish worth protecting, since it keeps the jaws off the painted or polished face entirely.

Beadblaster: For the Tire That Will Not Start Sealing

Some tires leak air past the rim faster than an inflator can supply it, so they never begin to seat — a stiff sidewall, cold rubber, or a tire that has taken a set standing flat in a rack. Waiting does not fix it and neither does more force. The built-in Beadblaster releases a large volume of air in one burst, pushing both beads outward against the flanges so the gap closes and the inflator has something to work against. It is part of the column rather than a separate tank to fetch.

What This Version Is and Is Not — Read This Before Ordering

We would rather set the expectation than take the phone call.

• Assembly is required. Atlas states the TC289 requires some assembly after purchase. It does not come off the truck ready to plug in, so allow time for it and read the manual first.
• An external air supply is required and not included. The jaws and bead breaker are air-operated. Working pressure is 90 to 110 PSI and must not exceed 140 PSI. A small compressor may reach that and still fail to hold it through repeated cycles; size for continuous duty.
• No assist arm. This is the plain TC289. Siblings in the range add a helper arm that holds the sidewall down in the drop centre for stiff or low-profile tires. If most of your work is runflats, look at those instead; if size rather than sidewall stiffness is what defeats your current machine, this is the right one.
• Motorcycle and ATV adapters are sold separately. Add them to the order if you need them.
• Power is 110volt. An ordinary outlet, no electrician.

Confirming your air supply, your floor space and the route in is the customer's responsibility. Leave clear room on the swing-arm side — the arm has to come over the wheel and swing back off it.

Force, and Where It Comes From

Two figures do the physical work. The bead breaker develops 5,500 lb. of force and the turntable produces 885 ft/lbs of rotating torque from a 1 HP motor. Torque is what carries a stiff sidewall past the mount/demount head without stalling, which is where a marginal machine gives up on a big tire. Rim protection is a metal mount/demount head taking a metal roller or replaceable plastic inserts, large plastic jaw covers, and a plastic cover for the bead breaker shovel — plastics meant to be consumed instead of the customer's wheel, with spares supplied.

Certification, Stated Plainly

Atlas publishes no independent third-party safety listing for the TC289, and we will not imply one. The distinction worth understanding is between an outside laboratory that tests a design against a published standard and then audits the plant that builds it, and a manufacturer stating conformity on its own authority. This machine is sold on the second basis.

For most tire-equipment buyers this never arises. It can arise with an insurer, a landlord, or a fleet or municipal contract that specifies listed shop equipment generally. If that describes you, settle it before you order and ask us — we will send whatever documentation the manufacturer publishes.

Shipping and Delivery

Ships by freight carrier within the lower 48 at 620 lbs, quoted live at checkout against your actual destination. Delivery is curbside and unloading is the buyer's job: at that weight you want a forklift, a dock, or a pallet jack and a ramp arranged in advance, or take terminal pickup. A home address rather than a commercial one carries a residential fee.

Inspect the pallet before you sign. Photograph anything that looks wrong, write the damage onto the bill of lading with the driver standing there, and keep your copy. Since this machine ships partly disassembled, check the parts against the packing list before the driver leaves rather than on assembly day.

Warranty

The TC289 carries 1 year of parts-only coverage: parts are supplied, the labour to fit them is yours. Atlas keeps replacement parts and wear items in stock, which matters on a machine whose jaw covers, head inserts and shovel cover are designed to be consumed.

Before concluding anything has failed, check your air. Pressure below the working range, water in the line, or an unserviced filter/regulator/lubricator all mimic a failing air cylinder, and are the most common cause of a changer that suddenly feels weak.

If it is a genuine fault, leave the machine assembled. Photograph it, note what you were doing when it happened, and call us before anything is stripped down. A part that arrives already dismantled has lost the evidence the claim rests on.
