Description
Atlas TC229 and WB49-2: The Combination Where the Balancer Is the Upgrade
Most tire packages put the money in the changer. This one does the opposite, and for a commercial bay that is often the right call. The WB49-2 measures wheel dimensions itself through automatic 2D data entry, positions the wheel for you, lights the working area, and includes a split-weight function for hiding weights behind spokes. Those four things attack the part of the job that actually consumes a technician's shift: the balancing, which happens twice per wheel and is where the comebacks come from.
The TC229 alongside it is a compact, capable rim-clamp swing-arm changer rather than a big-turntable machine. It handles tires to 39" in diameter and wheels to 13" wide at the bead breaker, which covers the overwhelming majority of car and light-truck work in a general shop.
Will It Fit?
- Power. Both machines are 110volt single phase.
- Air. The TC229's jaws and bead breaker are air-operated from an external supply at 90-110 PSI. Do not exceed 140 PSI. A filter, regulator and lubricator ship with the machine.
- Footprint. The TC229 is the smaller of the Atlas rim-clamp changers, which is a genuine advantage in a bay that is already tight. Leave room to swing the arm and to raise the balancer hood.
- Receiving. 550 lbs for the changer, 400 lbs for the balancer. That is a forklift, a dock or a terminal collection.
Automatic Data Entry, and Why It Pays For Itself
On a manual-entry balancer a technician measures rim distance, diameter and width, then keys three values in. It takes seconds and it is also the step where a wrong figure produces a wheel that reads balanced and is not. The WB49-2 takes its 2D data automatically. A width measuring gauge for full automatic 3D entry is available and is sold separately — it is not part of this package, and we would rather say that here than have you discover it at commissioning.
Auto-positioning stops the wheel at the point where the weight goes on, so the technician is not nudging the assembly by hand to find top dead centre. An automatic LED lights the inner rim surface, which is exactly where a clip-on or an adhesive weight has to be placed cleanly. The split-weight function divides a correction into two weights that can be tucked behind adjacent spokes on an open wheel, so an alloy that a customer paid for does not come back with a slab of lead on show.
The Measurement Itself
Underneath the automation, the WB49-2 spins at 150 RPM and reads to 1 gram, with weight position resolved to 1.4 degrees. It offers static and dynamic modes, a rapid optimization routine, self diagnosis and self calibration, a raised display and a large weight tray, and readings in grams or ounces and millimetres or inches. It takes rims from 10" to 32" in diameter and 1 1/2" to 20" wide on a 40mm shaft, up to 150 lbs of wheel, on a 1/4 HP motor, with automatic and pedal-operated braking and a hood that starts and stops the cycle. No anchor-down installation is required.
The Changer, in Proportion
The TC229 clamps steel, aluminum and alloy rims with jaws that move to three mounting positions, driven by an electric turntable with a 1 HP motor producing 885 ft/lbs of rotating torque. The bead breaker applies 5,500 lb of force. The mount/demount head is metal, with a metal roller or replaceable plastic inserts depending on how you prefer to work, and a Beadblaster is built in for tires that will not seat on ordinary inflation. Maximum tire diameter is 39" and maximum wheel width at the bead breaker is 13".
Perfect For
- Commercial shops doing steady volume on cars and light trucks, where balancing quality is what the customer notices.
- Alloy-heavy work — dealerships and independents where hiding weights behind spokes is a routine expectation.
- Tight bays that need real capability from a smaller-footprint changer.
- Shops upgrading a balancer and replacing a tired changer at the same time.
What Comes With It
Changer: column-mounted inflator box with gauge, filter/regulator/lubricator, a 20" tire tool, lube bucket with brush, a set of large plastic jaw covers, a plastic cover for the bead breaker shovel and multiple replacement plastic inserts for the mount/demount head. Balancer: plastic quick-release nut, four centering cones, wheel weight pliers and measuring calipers. External air supply required. The 3D width gauge is not included.

Certification
Both machines are CE approved. That is the manufacturer declaring conformity with European directives — a legitimate marking, but not the same instrument as a North American third-party product safety listing and not interchangeable with one. If your insurer or your local authority specifies a recognized third-party listing for shop equipment, get the exact requirement confirmed before you place the order.
Shipping and Receiving
Freight only, lower 48 states. Two crates and close to half a ton, so you need a forklift, a dock or a terminal pickup arranged in advance. A residential delivery address carries a residential fee, quoted live at checkout rather than fixed here. Check both crates while the driver waits, and write any damage on the bill of lading before you sign it.
Warranty
Both machines are covered by the Atlas 1 year parts only warranty — parts are supplied, labor is not. Contact us before opening a unit up. A machine that has already been stripped is the most common reason a valid claim becomes a difficult one.
