Maximum Root Volume for Full-Size Aquatic Plants

Hardy water lilies rated for large ponds produce pads spanning 12 to 18 inches and blooms 5 to 8 inches across when given adequate root space. A 20-inch pot provides enough volume for these varieties to reach their genetic potential across a full growing season without requiring division for 3 to 4 years. For lotus, a large pot volume is especially important given the species' vigorous lateral rhizome spread.

How to Use

Fill two-thirds with aquatic potting media. Plant the rhizome horizontally at the correct depth for the species. Cover to the crown with media. Top-dress firmly with pea gravel to prevent koi from rooting out the plant. Lower into the pond at the recommended depth for the species. In productive ponds, check annually for root congestion and divide when growth slows.
